Lookouts Game Notes 4/7/2016
Here are the Game Notes for today’s season opener against the Biloxi Shuckers!
News & Notes
Last Time Out: The Lookouts won their annual 7-inning exhibition game against Chattanooga State, 6-1. Aaron Slegers started the game and threw 3 shutout innings, while Ryan Eades (2 IP, 1 R), Brandon Peterson (1 SHU IP) and Marcus Walden (1 IP, 3 K) finished the game. Stuart Turner woke the Chattanooga offense up in the 5th when he drove in fellow catcher Mitch Garver (Turner DHed). Turner finished the day 2-3 with 2 R and a RBI. Joe Maloney excelled in his team debut, recording 2 H and a R.
Winning Touch: Manager Doug Mientkiewicz knows how to win, of that there is no doubt. In three seasons at the helm (2 in Ft Myers, 1 in Chattanooga), Mientkiewicz has accumulated two championships, a semifinal appearance in the one season he didn’t win it all and a 237-174 managerial record. He’ll try to guide Lookouts to back-to-back Southern League Championships, a la the 2011-12 Mobile BayBears, ’09-10 Jacksonville Suns and ’06-07 Montgomery Biscuits.
Familiar Faces: This year’s roster features 19 players from last year’s SL Championship team, including SLCS MVP Jason Wheeler.
Top Prospects: Gone are the days of Sano, Buxton and Berrios, but that doesn’t mean the Lookouts are devoid of big name prospects. 8 of MIN top 30 prospects will play for CHA, topped by relievers Nick Burdi (#9, on DL) and JT Chargois (#10).
Championship Rematch: The opening series features a championship rematch between the Lookouts and Shuckers. The Lookouts 3-2 series win clinched their first title since 1988.
