News & Notes

Last Time Out: One day after shutting out Birmingham, Chattanooga had the favor returned, falling to the Barons 6-0. SP DJ Baxendale pitched well, going 6 innings with 4 hits and 6 strikeouts, exactly matching winning pitcher Carson Fulmer’s box score line. Unfortunately, Alex Wimmers couldn’t hold the scoreless tie, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in the top of the seventh. The Barons added 4 insurance runs in the ninth off reliever Jake Reed and miscues by the Lookouts defense. 7 of the 9 Lookouts starters had hits, but the team ultimately failed to bring any of those runners home, going 0-for-8 with RISP and leaving 8 on base.

The Burd Has Landed: Nick Burdi made his 2016 debut last night after starting the season on the disabled list. Burdi pitched a perfect inning, allowing only three infield ground balls to put down the side in order in the 8th.

Keeping Control: Starting Pitcher DJ Baxendale had another solid start last night, failing to get the win but throwing 6 shutout innings and striking out 6. Perhaps most notable about Baxendale’s season so far is his strike out to walk ratio. Baxendale has faced 88 batters this year, while striking out 20 of them and walking only one in 23 innings.

I Wouldn’t If I Were You: Seven runners have tried to steal on C Mitch Garver this season (including the Baron’s Adam Engel last night) and only two have succeeded (Engel was not one of them). On top of his stellar .714 caught stealing rate, Garver also picked Josh Richmond off of first base last night with a laser beam of a pop throw after receiving a pitch.

Must Be Feeling Better: Since returning from the disabled list on April 21, SS Engelb Vielma is 4-for-9 over his last three games with 3 runs scored and an RBI with just one strikeout. Vielma’s bounce back from the injury has brought his average up to .286 on the year and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
