Lookouts Game Notes 5-29-16

News & Notes

Last Time Out: Travis Harrison played the hero role for the second night in a row with 3 RBI and the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth. Both starting pitchers in Saturday’s game threw quality starts with Aaron Slegers going 6 innings for Chattanooga, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Corey Williams and Trevor Hildenberger combined to shutout out the Smokies offense over the last three innings while allowing two hits and striking out four. DJ Hicks and Ryan Walker also had big days at the plate for the Lookouts, both finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. The victory clinched the Lookouts their fourth series win of the season and improved Chattanooga to 16-13 at AT&T Field.

Ice In the Veins: Travis Harrison came through with the game winning hit for the second time in as many days, with a double in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Ryan Walker and DJ Hicks. Harrison had all three of the Lookouts RBI yesterday and has five in the last two games. Harrison is hitting .313 with 11 runs scored and 10 driven in with a .394 OBP in May.

Renaissance Man: Omar Bencomo has done a little bit of everything for the Lookouts pitching staff since arriving in Chattanooga, April 27th. Bencomo started his third game on last Monday (4IP 2R 2ER 1BB 6K), on very short notice, running his totals as a starter to a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings pitched with five walks and 12 strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Bencomo has made three appearances with just one earned run allowed in four innings pitched, while also serving as the closer for one of those games, earning his first career save, May 15th against Biloxi.

Closing Time: When JT Chargois was called up to AAA Rochester, it left the Lookouts with a hole at closer, but Trevor Hildenberger has wasted no time filling it. Hildenberger earned his fifth save last night with a perfect bottom of the ninth and is scoreless in his last six outings (9 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 9 K). The righty has used his deceptive delivery (changing arm angles) to keep hitters off balance in the Southern League, allowing just two runs in 15 innings with just a .176 average against.

What a Relief: Corey Williams & Trevor Hildenberger combined for three shutout innings last night, adding to a dominant stretch for the Lookouts bullpen. Over the last ten innings thrown by Chattanooga’s relief corps, only one run has crossed the plate over six hits and two walks, while the relief pitchers have struck out 14 batters over said span. In the month of May, the bullpen is 4-4, 10-for-11 in save situations with 74 K, 32 BB, 70 H, and a 3.19 ERA in 76.1 innings pitched.
