Lookouts Game Notes 6-15-16

News & Notes

Last Time Out: The Chattanooga Lookouts fell 4-1 in the series finale against the Smokies but still took the set of games 3 wins to 2 for their 7th series victory of the season. Number seven Twins prospect Kohl Stewart threw his second quality start in three games, going six and two-thirds with 3 runs (just one earned) and seven hits allowed, but took his first Southern League loss as the offense could only manage a single run Tuesday. Corey Williams finished the game with 1.1 innings pitched allowing the fourth run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. The top of the order were the only ones getting much done offensively as Zack Granite (lead-off) and Engelb Vielma (batting second) were the only multi-hit performers at the plate. Granite finished 2-for-4 with a run and his fourth triple of the season while Vielma went 2-for-3 with the lone RBI and a double.

Zack The Flash: Zack Granite stole his 29th base of the season Monday, good for second in the Southern League. Granite remains on pace for 63 swiped bags, which would rank in the top five single season performances on the base paths in team history. Granite also had his team-leading 23rd multi-hit performance yesterday and is 13-for-39 with two homeruns, seven runs and five driven in over the last ten days (9 games).

Quality Work: DJ Baxendale enters his start today with nine straight decisions, going 5-4 over that span, and winning three of his last four starts. Baxendale threw six innings of one run ball in his last start with five strikeouts. Bax has quality starts in eight of thirteen games started this season and has allowed more than three runs just twice.

Hey Now, You’re An All Star: Trevor Hildenberger, DJ Baxendale, Travis Harrison, Daniel Palka, & Mitch Garver were all named Southern League Midseason All Stars Monday. They’ll represent the Lookouts in Pearl, MIS over the All Star Break June 20-22. Palka will DH and bat clean-up while Garver will start behind the plate in the All Star Game, as announced this morning.

Palka, Player of the Week: Daniel Palka received Southern League Player of the Week honors today after hitting .345 with seven extra-base hits, four HRs, 10 RBI, a .931 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.306 between June 6th and June 12th. Palka is on pace for 35 long balls this season, leads the league in HRs-per-at-bats (1/14.00), and is second in RBI with 50.

HR Race: This year’s and last year’s Southern League Home Run leaders are in a neck-&-neck battle for the lead in long balls for the Twins organization. Adam Brett Walker hit his 13th of the season Tuesday night to move within two of Daniel Palka. Palka took the lead with a pair of homers Thursday (his third multi-HR game of the season), extended the lead with another Friday, and hit yet another homer Sunday (16 total).
