News & Notes
Last Time Out: The Lookouts offense displayed plenty of 4th of July fireworks in an 11-5 victory of the Barons. Zack Granite went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in his first game back since June 30. Mitch Garver went 3-for-3 while falling a triple shy of the cycle, scoring four times, driving in two and walking twice. Daniel Palka hit his league-leading 21st HR, and Levi Michael and Stuart Turner both finished with a pair of hits. If the hitting wasn’t enough, Chattanooga was aided by five wild pitches by the Birmingham pitching staff. David Hurlbut earned his sixth win with 5.2 innings of work, allowing five runs but only three earned. Raul Fernandez and Zack Jones finished the game on the mound, each throwing scoreless outings with Jones striking out four over two frames.
The Tools of Ignorance: After going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two driven in with his 8th homer of the season, Lookouts catcher Mitch Garver passed Biloxi’s Jacob Nottingham (7) for most home runs by a Southern League catcher this season. Garver was a triple shy of the cycle.
Quality Work: Tonight’s starter Ryan Eades is 3-1 in his last four starts and has thrown quality starts in six of his last eight outings.
Zack The Flash: With a monster 4-for-5 night at the plate, Zack Granite extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Granite hit .363 in June, going hitless just twice in 25 games. He has nine extrabase hits (4-2B, 2-3B, 3 HR), with 18 runs scored and 10 RBI, eight stolen bases, while walking more than he has struck out in those 25 games (9BB/7K). The hot streak has elevated Granite into second in stolen bases (32) and in to the top three in hits (88) and runs (47).
Chicks Dig the Long Ball: Daniel Palka went deep for the 21st time this season Monday and remains at the top of the southern league in homers, SLG (.558), extra base hits (tied with 37) and RBI (64). In the month of June the slugger had 13 HRs which is the most in all of MiLB in that span. He’s on pace for 36 home runs and 110 RBI, which would surpass the Lookouts single season home run record set by Adam Brett Walker II.
Streaking: The Lookouts beat the Blue Wahoos in three of five games in their first clash of the second half to clinch their seventh straight series victory. Chattanooga went 17-9 in the month of June, and has started July 3-1.
Top Prospects: Daniel Palka and Trevor Hildenberger both entered MLB Pipeline’s top 30 Twins prospects list after an update yesterday. Hildenberger got ranked 24th while Palka, fresh off winning Southern League Player of the Month for June, came in at 27th.
