News & Notes
Last Time Out: Aaron Slegers won his sixth straight game with his ninth straight quality start to lead the Lookouts to a 10-4 victory. Slegers went six innings with seven hits and two runs allowed with a walk and a strikeout. Mason Melotakis pitched the seventh and struck out the side, before Raul Fernandez pitched the last two innings allowing two runs and punching out three. The Lookouts offense scored 10 runs on 16 hits as every starter had a hit with six of the nine finishing with multiple hits, capped by Zack Granite’s three hit night.
Streaking: The Lookouts clinched a series win against the Barons with their third win in four games. The series victory was the Lookouts eighth straight. Chattanooga went 17-9 in the month of June, and has started July 5-2.
Moving Parts: The Lookouts gained three new faces and said goodbye to two familiar ones Thursday as Daniel Palka was called up to Rochester and Omar Bencomo was placed on the disabled list to make room for pitchers Tyler Jay and Felix Jorge as well as OF Edgar Corcino. Jay was the number six overall pick in last year’s draft and comes highly touted as the #2 Twins prospect, #52 prospect in the top 100, and #4 of the top ten LHP prospects in all of baseball (per MLBPipeline). Jorge was 9-3 with a 1.55 ERA in 14GS with 11 walks compared to 77K in 93 innings pitched while Corcino was hitting .264 through 73 games.
Quality Work: Aaron Slegers won his sixth straight game and threw his ninth consecutive quality start Saturday night. Slegers is 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA through that stretch and is 8-4 with a 3.39 overall.
Miss You Already: Daniel Palka left the Lookouts as the Southern League leader in HR, RBI and SLG and picked off right where he left off in his first game in Triple-A. Palka went 3-for-5 with two HR and a double in his Rochester Red Wings debut Thursday.
Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves has had some struggles with control and had just one quality start in his three outings with the Lookouts but he shined yesterday, going six shutout innings while striking out five. One thing he has undoubtedly done well is strike batters outs. The LHP has Ked 19 Southern League batters in 14.2 innings pitched.
Zack The Flash: With a monster 4-for-5 night at the plate Monday, Zack Granite extended his hitting streak to 15 games, before ending it there Tuesday. Granite hit .363 in June, going hitless just twice in 25 games. He has nine extra base hits (4-2B, 2-3B, 3 HR), with 18 runs scored and 10 RBI, eight stolen bases, while walking more than he has struck out in those 25 games (9BB/7K). The hot streak elevated Granite into second in stolen bases (32) and in to the top three in hits (88) and runs (47).
