News & Notes
Last Time Out: Felix Jorge’s first game as a Lookout started wonderfully as he retired the first 10 batters he faced, but the wheels fell off as Jorge took a loss in his debut, allowing 10 hits, seven runs, while walking one and striking out four. Zack Jones, Mason Melotakis and Raul Fernandez all threw scoreless outings in relief. Ryan Walker and Mitch Garver each had multi-hit nights while Stuart Turner hit his fourth HR of the season. The Lookouts fell 7-6 and need to win out to preserve their series winning streak of eight straight.
POW: Mitch Garver earned Minnesota Twins minor league player of the week honors after going 10-22 (.455) with a homer, four doubles, seven runs scored, five driven in and six drawn walks through six games last week.
Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves has had some struggles with control and had just one quality start in his three outings with the Lookouts but he shined in his last start, going six shutout innings while striking out five. One thing he has undoubtedly done well is strike batters outs. The LHP has Ked 19 Southern League batters in 14.2 innings pitched.
Heating Up: Stuart Turner, while in just a small sample size of six games, has started to heat up with the weather in July. The catcher hit his fourth homer of the season yesterday and is now batting .400 with two runs scored and seven driven in this month.
What-a-Relief: Mason Melotakis threw his 10th straight scoreless outing last night, striking out his 13th batter over that span in the process, while Zack Jones remains scoreless since returning the Lookouts and Twins organization after the Brewers forfeited his Rule 5-Draft selection.
Quality Work: Aaron Slegers won his sixth straight game and threw his ninth consecutive quality start Saturday night. Slegers is 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA through that stretch and is 8-4 with a 3.39 overall. He’ll have to wait a bit longer than expected to go for his seventh straight as he was placed on the Disabled List with right biceps tendinitis, retroactive to July 10th.
Streaking: The Lookouts clinched a series win against the Barons with their third win in four games. The series victory was the Lookouts eighth straight. Chattanooga went 17-9 in the month of June, and has started July 5-2.
Zack The Flash: Zack Granite returned to the Lookouts lineup after two days off with a 2-for-3 night at the plate to go with a run scored, a run driven in and two walks Sunday. That performance elevated Granite to a .524 batting average (11-for-21) in the month of July. In 12 second half games, Granite is hitting .435 with eight runs scored, seven driven in, a homer, twice as many walks as strikeouts (4-2) and two stolen bases.
