Top Prospects (per MLBPipeline):

RHP Yoan Lopez, Rank – #6

2016 stats – 2-2, 3.97 ERA, 22.2 IP (5 GS), 22H, 11 R, 10 ER, 10 BB, 14 K, 1.41 WHIP, .256 BAA

The Diamondbacks went well over their allotted pool of international spending funds to bring in Yoan Lopez from Cuba. The 6-foot-3 righty has three pitches that rate above average on the scouting grades scale including a plus rating on his fastball that he can run up into the mid-90s. His curveball and changeup both project to be at least Major League average as well. Lopez started the year with three quality starts through his first three games but lasted only 4.2 innings over his last two while allowing 8 runs and walking six in that span. He won his only start against the Lookouts throwing six shutout innings, but will not face them during this series as he is on the DL.

SP Taylor Clarke, Rank – #10

2016 stats – 3-5, 3.53 ERA, 51.0 IP (8 GS), 51 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 11 BB, 38 K, 1.22 WHIP, .256 BAA

Clarke battled back from Tommy John surgery his sophomore year of college to be taken 76th overall (3rd round) in last year’s draft and began his pro career with an outstanding season out of the bullpen for Hillsboro. He didn’t allow a single run in his time there before entering 2016 being stretched out for starting pitching. So far this year Clarke has climbed three levels, beginning the season with Kane County with a 2.83 ERA through six starts, making a short four start stint with Visalia, and finally landing in Mobile where he is 3-5 with a 3.53 ERA in eight starts thus far. Scouts like Clarke for his “extremely downhill” delivery, superb spotting of his low-90s fastball, and “strong, durable frame” that should allow him to sustain a career in the starting rotation. The Lookouts will get their first look at Clarke Sunday when he starts opposite the Lookouts’ Felix Jorge.
