News & Notes
Last Time Out: A bases-loaded walk by DJ Hicks in the bottom of the 8th sent the Lookouts fans home happy with a 3-2 win in the series opener against the Bay Bears. David Hurlbut threw a quality start, his 10th in his last 13 outings, with two runs allowed in six innings. He also struck out six. Raul Fernandez earned his first win with the Lookouts with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, setting up Trevor Hildenberger to close out the game with his 14th save. Leo Reginatto finished 3-for-4 at the late with a run and a RBI while Hicks and Engelb Vielma also drove in a run.
Renaissance Man: Tonight’s starter Omar Bencomo has done a little bit of everything for the Lookouts pitching staff this season. The RHP is 1-3 but sports a respectable 3.86 ERA in four games started, is 1-1 out of the bullpen with a 3.21, and has even closed out a few games with a perfect 3-for-3 record in save opportunities.
Mr. 100: Zack Granite took the Southern League lead in hits with a 3-for-5 day Wednesday, while also becoming the first SL batter to the 100 hit mark. His .444 July average and .410 second half average has elevated his overall numbers (.311) into the top three batting averages in the league as well.
Streaking: The Lookouts clinched a series win against the Smokies, winning 11-1 in the rubber match. The series victory was the Lookouts ninth straight. Chattanooga’s last series loss was to the Jackson Generals in May.
What-a-Relief: Mason Melotakis threw his 10th straight scoreless outing Monday, striking out his 13th batter over that span in the process, while Zack Jones remains scoreless since returning the Lookouts and Twins organization after the Brewers forfeited his Rule 5-Draft selection, after another two spotless innings yesterday.
POW: Mitch Garver earned Minnesota Twins minor league player of the week honors after going 10-22 (.455) with a homer, four doubles, seven runs scored, five driven in and six drawn walks through six games last week.
Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves improved to 3-1 with the Lookouts, dominant in his last start, going six shutout innings while striking out 11 without a walk. One thing he has undoubtedly done well is strike batters outs. The LHP has Ked 30 Southern League batters in 20.2 innings pitched.
Quality Work: Aaron Slegers won his sixth straight game and threw his ninth consecutive quality start Saturday night. Slegers is 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA through that stretch and is 8-4 with a 3.39 overall. He’ll have to wait a bit longer than expected to go for his seventh straight as he was placed on the Disabled List with right biceps tendinitis, retroactive to 7/10
