Last Time Out: The Lookouts won 5-2 in their final game against the Barons in 2016. Felix Jorge earned his first Southern League win with six innings of two run ball. Jorge also struck out six and walked two to improve to 1-2. Alan Busenitz preserved his spotless ERA since being traded to the Twins with two shutout innings and Raul Fernandez picked up his first save with the Lookouts. Stuart Turner (3-for-4) and Levi Michael (2-for-4 R RBI) both finished with multiple hits at the plate for Chattanooga.
Playoff Implications: Montgomery and Chattanooga enter this series tied at 2nd overall and tied for the 2nd half playoff spot in the North Division since Jackson leads the division again. The five game set offers a chance for either team to pull ahead in the playoff race.
Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves has K’ed 63 batters in 53.2 innings pitched across nine starts for the Lookouts. The LHP allowed eight runs in his first two starts lasting just 8.2 combined innings, but has thrown 45 innings with 22 hits and six runs allowed in six starts since. Southern League batters are hitting just .186 against Stephen in 183 total AB.
Stepping Up: In the five games since Mitch Garver was called up, Stuart Turner is batting .579 (11-for-19) with five doubles, four runs scored, five driven in, with two walks and four strikeouts. Turner’s hitting .344 in August and .288 in the second half, 50 points higher than his current season average.
Roster Shuffling: In the last week, the Lookouts roster has seen numerous players called-up to Triple-A Rochester. Mitch Garver, Leo Reginatto, David Hurlbut, Omar Bencomo, Jake Reed and now Heiker Meneses have all gotten promotions to the Red Wings, while TJ White, Tanner Witt and Luke Bard have been added to the roster. The current Lookouts roster has just 23 active players on it.
Decisions, Decisions: RHP Kohl Stewart has received a decision in every game since his Lookouts debut, earning his sixth win Saturday (6-5). Stewart is 4-1 in his last five starts with a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings pitched during that stretch.
Season Series Sweep: With Sunday’s victory, the Lookouts cemented that their 2016 season will end without having lost a series to the Barons. Chattanooga is 13-6 against Birmingham going into the two teams’ last meeting of the year and the Lookouts have won every series the squads have played.
