News & Notes
Last Time Out: Stephen Gonsalves dazzled on the mound in a 6-3 win over the Biscuits Wednesday. The LHP threw six no-hit innings with nine punch outs and two walks. An elevated pitch count was the only thing that could slow down Gonsalves, as he was pulled after 105 pitches in his six innings of work. Zack Jones earned his first 2016 save with the Lookouts with two shutout innings pitched. Ryan Walker and TJ White both finished with multi-hit nights with Walker scoring and walking once while White drove in two and scored once.
Roster Shuffling: In another flurry of roster moves, the Lookouts bullpen shuffled with Mason Melotakis heading to the DL and Alan Busenitz called up to Triple-A Rochester. Omar Bencomo returns to Chattanooga after just one start in Rochester and Todd Van Steensel will make his debut with the Lookouts, being called up from Ft. Myers.
Playoff Implications: Montgomery and Chattanooga enter this series tied at 2nd overall and tied for the 2nd half playoff spot in the North Division since Jackson leads the division again. The five game set offers a chance for either team to pull ahead in the playoff race.
Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves has K’ed 72 batters in 59.2 innings pitched across 10 starts for the Lookouts, capped by 9 in six no-hit innings Wednesday. The LHP allowed eight runs in his first two starts lasting just 8.2 combined innings, but has thrown 51 innings with 22 hits and six runs allowed in seven starts since, with a 1.06 ERA during that span. Southern League batters are hitting just .168 against Stephen in 202 total AB.
Stepping Up: In the six games since Mitch Garver was called up, Stuart Turner is batting .522 (12-for-23) with five doubles, five runs scored, five driven in, with two walks and four strikeouts. Turner’s hitting .333 in August and .287 in the second half.
Decisions, Decisions: RHP Kohl Stewart has received a decision in every game since his Lookouts debut, earning his sixth win Saturday (6-5). Stewart is 4-1 in his last five starts with a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings pitched during that stretch.
Season Series Sweep: With Sunday’s victory, the Lookouts cemented that their 2016 season will end without having lost a series to the Barons. Chattanooga is 13-6 against Birmingham going into the two teams’ last meeting of the year and the Lookouts have won every series the squads have played.
