Lookouts Game Notes 9-2-16

News & Notes

Last Time Out: The Lookouts snuck out a 3-2 win over the Jackson Generals in the opener of the final regular season series of 2016. Stephen Gonsalves wasn’t quite a sharp as he was in August and struggled with his pitch count and command, walking four and lasting just three innings after throwing 79 pitches. The lefty limited the damage on the scoreboard to just two runs on two hits and struck out five. Todd Van Steensel, Randy Rosario and Raul Fernandez combined for a six inning shutout in relief to pick up the slack on the mound. Van Steensel threw three innings and allowed three hits but no runs while Rosario and Fernandez threw hitless outings. Zach Granite and Stuart Turner led the way for the offense with two hits and a run scored each. Granite also drove in a run.

Zach the Flash Granite: Zach Granite stole his 54th base of the season Tuesday which moved the speedster into sole possession of 4th in the Lookouts single season record book. He passed with Dwight Taylor (1982) and Wally Dashiell (1929) for fifth last weekend and now edged by Dee Gordon for fourth (53, 2010).

Arizona Fall League: The Lookouts will have three players from the 2016 representing them in the Arizona Fall League as C Mitch Garver, LHP Mason Melotakis and RHP Randy Rosario were all selected to play in the fall set of games.

Heating Up: Edgar Corcino has caught fire in his last 10 games entering the series, hitting .385 (15-for-39) with seven runs scored and 14 driven in.

August Wrap Up: Zach Granite, Stuart Turner and TJ White all finished with .300 batting averages or higher in August with Granite at .316 with 20 runs scored, 14 driven in and 15 bases stolen. Turner hit 303 in 21 games, driving in 12 and scoring seven times, while White hit exactly .300 through 19 games.

Hey Now, You’re an All-Star: Zach Granite and Daniel Palka were selected as post-season all stars in the Southern League as announced by the league Tuesday. Granite is currently the leader for the league batting title and remains in the top three in several offensive and defensive categories, while hitting .321 in the second half to lead a Lookouts offense depleted by call-ups. Palka left the Southern League two weeks into the second half but hit 21 homers with 65 RBI with the Lookouts through July 7 to earn the honor.

Three Stars of the Series: 8/27-31

While they dropped their final regular season home series three games to two versus the Mississippi Braves, a few Lookouts players put on quite the show in the final five games at AT&T Field. Below are the top three stand outs in this weeks Three Stars of the Series.

ThreeStars 8-31-16

Third Star – Stephen Gonsalves

Stephen Gonsalves capped a phenomenal August with his fourth straight and eighth overall victory (8-1) in the series opener Saturday. Gonsalves lasted just 5.2 innings because of a 103 pitch count, but the lefty was strong in those 5.2, allowing just five hits, shutting out the M-Braves and striking out six. The latest win sealed Gonsalves’ August at 4-0 in five starts with an unbelievably dominant 0.28 ERA, .125 batting average against and a 0.75 WHIP, earning him MiLB and Southern League player of the month honors.

Second Star – Randy LeBlanc

LeBlanc was called up to Chattanooga after going 5-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 13 starts for the Fort Myers Miracle to replaced an injured Kohl Stewart, but it was the Cedar Rapids version of LeBlanc (where he went 6-2 with a 0.74 ERA in 9 starts) that showed up to AT&T Field Monday Night. Randy threw seven shutout innings in his first taste of the Southern League, punching out three and surrendering just five hits. The righty got things done by forcing a lot of ground balls and setting up his defense for three double plays.

First Star – Edgar Corcino

The Lookouts offense in the five game series was largely driven by Edgar Corcino, who has caught fire in the last week. Corcino hit .389 (7-for-18) against the M-Braves pitching staff, scoring three runs and driving in five with two doubles and a triple. The outfielder struck out only three times while walking the same number and has accounted for 21 runs in Chattanooga’s last ten games. With the big performance, Corcino ran his season totals up to a .294 average with 24 scores and 25 RBI in 45 contests.

Honorable Mentions: Ryan Eades and Aaron Slegers both went 6+ innings in quality starts while Niko Goodrum went 6-for-18 with four of those six hits coming for extra bases (2B, 2-3B, HR).
