News & Notes

Last Time Out: The Lookouts fell 6-3 Tuesday evening the series with the M-Braves to two games apiece. Ryan Eades threw a quality start with six innings of two-run ball. Eades walked two and allowed seven hits but struck out seven as well. Luke Bard threw a scoreless outing to send the Lookouts to the ninth with a lead, but Raul Fernandez blew his third save of the year with four runs allowed in the last inning. Tanner Witt led the way for the Lookouts offense with three hits, a run and an RBI while Zach Granite and Edgar Corcino each had a pair of base knocks.

Hey Now, You’re an All-Star: Zach Granite and Daniel Palka were selected as post-season all stars in the Southern League as announced by the league Tuesday. Granite is currently the leader for the league batting title and remains in the top three in several offensive and defensive categories, while hitting .321 in the second half to lead a Lookouts offense depleted by call-ups. Palka left the Southern League two weeks into the second half but was so dominant a power hitter while he was here, he was honored (again, was a first half all star as well) anyway. Palka hit 21 homers with 65 RBI with the Lookouts through July 7.

Zach the Flash Granite: Zach Granite stole his 53rd base of the season Tuesday which moved the speedster into a tie for 4th in the Lookouts single season record book. He passed with Dwight Taylor (1982) and Wally Dashiell (1929) for fifth last weekend and now sits tied with Dee Gordon for fourth (53, 2010).

Playoff Break Down: The Lookouts remain in the hunt for the second half playoff spot in the North Division. Chattanooga would need to take over first place in the second half or, should the Jackson Generals win both halves, finish with the next best overall record. MTG took over first place Monday after sweeping a double header. The Lookouts sit three games back in the half standings and one game behind MTG for second in the overall.

League Leader: Zach Granite leads the league in OF assists, putouts, total chances, and sports a fantastic .996 fielding % in CF. List of other things Granite is top three in the league in: H (1st), R (2nd), 3B (2nd), AB (2nd), AVG (1st), and SB (1st).

Missing Bats: Stephen Gonsalves has K’ed 84 batters in 71.1 innings pitched across 12 starts for the Lookouts, capped by 6 in a quality start Monday. The LHP allowed eight runs in his first two starts lasting just 8.2 combined innings, but has thrown 62.2 innings with 29 hits and seven runs allowed in nine starts since. Southern League batters are hitting just .170 against Stephen in 241 total AB. Gonsalves has allowed just one earned run since July 30th (32.2 IP since).

Three Stars of the Series: 8/17-21

The Lookouts came up huge in their last series, beating the Montgomery Biscuits three games to two and taking a one game lead in the playoff race between the two teams. Let’s take a look at the three biggest performances in the series that put the Lookouts in control of their own playoff destiny with fourteen games to play in the 2016 regular season.

ThreeStars 8-22-16

Third Star – Ryan Eades

Eades began the 2016 season as one of the Lookouts five starters but got reassigned to bullpen duty when the Twins assigned a trio of young arms to the Lookouts rotation early in the second half. Ryan showed that perhaps he’s worthy of a return to starting in a spot start assignment against the Biscuits Saturday. The righty went six innings while allowing just two base runners (one hit, one walk) and no runs while striking out four. Eades is 1-0 with 11.2 innings without an earned run surrendered in August with a 15/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Second Star – Kohl Stewart

Kohl Stewart showed signs of progression in the Southern League yet again with a strong eight inning outing against Montgomery. The Native-Texan surrendered a lone run on five hits and struck out five batters to improve to 7-6. Stewart has gotten improved results in his latest starts going 5-2 in his last seen with a 2.08 ERA in 43.2 innings during that span.

First Star – Stephen Gonsalves

Stephen Gonsalves’ impressive start to Double-A ball in the second half of the season cannot be overstated so far. The lefty dazzled in the game opener against the Biscuits carrying a no-hitter through six innings before being pulled because of an elevated pitch count. He has K’ed 78 batters in 65.2 innings pitched across 11 starts for the Lookouts, capped by 6 in a quality start Monday, allowed just one earned run in his last 27 innings pitched, and has held Southern League batters to a .163 average in 221 total at bats.
